Curriculum Vitae

Born in '58, I ran a classical academic course and built a career in HR Management.
Drawing and painting had been around since childhood and I inherited them from previous generations.
The passion for ceramics arose 8 years ago through education at the Art Academies in Zwevegem and Kortrijk. I am now completing the specialisation years in ceramics at the Art Academy in Tielt.

Various internships with renowned ceramist-artists at home and abroad (including Jane Norbury, Dalloun, Brigitte Marionneau and Corinne Guého, Jozef Zsolt...), form a challenge for learning new techniques and show the unbridled possibilities of clay and ceramics.

Since 2020, there has also been the translation in the creation of a ceramic gallery for abstract ceramic sculptures Adrienne D. te Marke.

The gallery's name explicitly refers to my grandmother Adrienne Dupont, scion of an industrial pottery in Poperinge dating back to the 14th century.

In 2023, I was selected to participate in the expo ArtistMeeting in Knokke.

Inspiration

Vast landscapes and minimalist architectural forms are the sources of inspiration for my designs.

Here, I look for the balance between elegant movement and structure or symmetry that brings calm. It is about a balance between keeping under control and experimenting, innovating.

Abstract forms arise from lines and planes that are sometimes coloured in.  Beautiful aerial photographs inspire me in colouring.

In essence, I do not aim for the figurative. Sometimes figurative images arise that are merely the opening to the imagination.

...Letting hectics ebb away or ground into clay.

Technique

From what inspires me, I make sketches on paper and cut out the rough shapes in cardboard.

I prefer to work with clay slabs.
The chamotte (pebbles in the clay) is removed by applying several layers of sludge to leather-hard clay.
Those sludge layers are then polished very tightly until they have maximum gloss.

After the work is fired a first time at 940°, smoke-firing follows and there is a finish with pure warm beeswax to obtain a warm black sheen.

Other works are packed with natural elements and raw materials and fired in a wood fire. In this case, the unpredictable colour effect of the pit fire is targeted.

Working with terra Sigillatas of coloured pigments (bodystains) is the new challenge for me.
